In this episode we received a question via Facebook. This guy was having troubles saying “My dog won’t retrieve!” Jeremy takes you along with him as he diagnosis the situation this guy finds himself in, and what steps he needs to take to get back on track.

Many dogs did not have the finished retrieve that we are looking to get in our retriever training. Chomping on the bumper, dropping short, victory laps, unwillingness to bring bumpers to hand, these are all common issues that many people face, and if you are, this podcast will help you to find the solution!

We ordered 500 birds to arrive in three different batches at varying times throughout the summer. The birds came as real young chicks through the mail, of which we then placed into surrogates until they were big enough to release.

Our goal with these birds is to use them for training, as well as hunting come fall. Raising your own pheasants is a great way to have live birds for your own training, as well as for pleasure. Hopefully this podcast episode will help any one who is thinking about or already does raising pheasants, as we will be discussing what worked for us and what didn’t work.

Introducing your puppy to young kids, friends, and even strangers is a very important part of socializing your new pup.

There is a correct way to do this, and it is essential that you have the knowledge to teach your family and friends how to correctly interact with your puppy, and even your dogs. The wrong interactions can erode training and form bad habits that will cause many problems down the road.

Before we start this training, the dogs foundation must be solid. The sit to the whistle command must be completed and strong enough that your dog does it at a distance. In this episode of the DogBone Pawdcast, we talk about a new training series we have started and will continue called “Cody…Go Back”.

This series will follow Jeremy as he completes start to finish the process of teaching a gun dog to handle. Episodes will be uploaded daily to our YouTube account, and will allow you to see the steps Jeremy takes to get a dog to handle.

Episode 22 digs into this new series, and why this will benefit you in your own training efforts.  Professional Dog Trainer Jeremy Moore teaches a young dog how to understand hand signals and take directions using “go back” to send the dog back and “get out” to the left and right.

There are steps that we need to take before starting the handling process and your foundation must be 100% including a solid sit to the whistle. When teaching handling to a dog, we always start with the back command. Back is an extension of a dogs ability to line, you are just sending him/her from a different position.

An analogy Jeremy uses very often is that of a chain, you need all the links in the chain connecting for there to be a chain. You could have a few very strong links, but without the rest of the links you won’t have a chain. The same is true in our dog training in that we could be very solid with some aspects, but lacking in others. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, which is why we need to be able to recognize what our dogs need work on and not be afraid to face it.

We start out by discussing takeaways from this year’s workshops, and common themes among the handlers and dogs that attended.  One of these theme that was very evident was the need for hold conditioning.

Many dogs did not have the finished retrieve that we are looking to get in our retriever training. Chomping on the bumper, dropping short, victory laps, unwillingness to bring bumpers to hand, and “switching” (dropping one bumper mid retrieve to pick up another) are all symptoms of a dog that is in need of hold conditioning. Hold conditioning fixes all these problems, and as we like to say, “is the key to unlocking the retrieve.” We have a ton of information and content on how, when, and where to complete hold conditioning with your own dog such as the DogBoneHunter YouTube page, our Facebook, and these podcasts!

By starting too early or retrieving too often, and starting off incorrectly, a dog can very easily become what we call “shed shy” which is very similar to a gun shy dog. If the dog has a bad experience with sheds at a young age you run the risk of turning them off antlers.  This becomes a very difficult and time consuming fix.

What needs to happen first in early retrieves with puppy: short pitches in a hallway with a balled up sock. Get the dog to go straight out and back, and do not start out with real sheds or anything that is a struggle for the young pup to pick! Early intro risks a dog jabbing itself on a tine and creates a negative experiences with something that is ultimately what you want them to love.  We start out with the Antler Dummy to condition shape…it is soft, won’t poke or jab and eliminates your risk of the negative introduction.

There’s such a special place on our hearts for all of the attendees. Watching everyone push boundaries, get outside of their comfort zone, build patience and understanding as handlers while taking away strong life lessons that pertain to so much more than raising a dog. Following each workshop, our team ends up feeling like we gain as much, if not more, than those attending.  It’s not so much about the dogs at these workshops, it’s about the people.  Listen to this episode to find out why.

As always, The DogBone Pawdcastthanks for tuning in and keep the questions and feedback coming. We appreciate it more than you know!

In this episode we talk about a commonly asked question as well as a common solution to many training issues in the field: Heel work.  We’ve all seen the dogs out taking their owner for a walk (yes I said that right). You’d think they’re training for the Iditarod with the amount of pulling taking place! Or maybe there are other issues with control out in the field with placement or the dog becoming the leader instead of the handler. The thing is, Jeremy didn’t always focus on heel work like he does now. But there was a point in his training that he realized in order to get really good at the “fun stuff” or hunting in the field, there HAS to be a a strong heel foundation.

Learn the how and why behind heel work in this episode, and also how to get started if you haven’t worked on it yet.

My dog won’t stop whining! In this episode we cover why dogs whine and what to do about it. “My dog won’t stop whining” is a question that many dog owners have. We pulled an example question from a facebook message about a dog that has come a long way, but now still has a soft whine and whimper almost constantly whenever there is anything exciting about to happen.  The owner has tried being stern, being patient, ignoring…now what? Tune in to find out!
