Rabbit Hunting with Labs!?! How We Do It | Ep: #98

Rabbit Hunting with Labs

Rabbit hunting with labs is exactly what we did this past weekend, and we have had a bunch of questions coming in because of it! While grouse hunting in the north woods, we often jump snowshoe hares holed up in fallen trees or thick cover. Normally, we have a rule that when we are grouse hunting we don’t shoot rabbits. This is strictly due to safety concerns with the dogs, and preventing a potential accident. On this occasion, a lack of grouse made the white buggers a bit more tempting… so we decided to give the green light on the hare.

By having our dogs retrieving rabbits that we shoot, many may think that this could cause them to want to start chasing rabbits. This comes back to the foundation, and having the ability to stop the dog on a whistle, and recall with heavy distractions. Hunting rabbits with labs is a lot of fun, very rewarding, and something we will continue to do in the future!

As a little bonus, we drop a recipe for rabbit towards the end of the podcast! If you hunt rabbits, give it a try!

As always,  thanks for tuning in and keep the questions and feedback coming.

Also, a HUGE THANK YOU to the Turnpike Troubadours for allowing us to use a snippet from one of our all-time favorite songs The Bird Hunter.  Make sure to check out their music, they are a favorite of ours.
